Incorporating the Acai Berry as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle Aged 55 and Beyond

While health is a concern for all of us throughout our lives, as we age the importance of looking after ourselves becomes increasingly apparent. Whilst fatty foods and sugary snacks may have garnered negligible effects on our well-being throughout our twenties and thirties, as we head towards retirement the impact an unhealthy lifestyle has on our mind and our bodies’ surges.

While the Acai berry has flooded the media in recent years, its consumption has not usually been targeted at the over 55’s. Marketed as a weight loss tool for the young and glamorous – the reality is that such Acai berry weight loss ‘miracles’ are largely part of a very effective advertising campaign.

The truth is however, that the Acai berry is very healthy and when consumed properly can aid in weight loss.

As we age a vast abundance of health problems begin to manifest – heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, weight gain, arthritis and diabetes to name just a few. While to an extent some of these things are unavoidable, leading a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of such ailments occurring.

Reassessing your lifestyle can mean making some significant changes. It shouldn’t need to be said that it’s always a very good idea to cease smoking.

Reducing alcohol intake is also highly beneficial but there’s no need to quit altogether – studies have demonstrated time and again that small amounts of alcohol can be beneficial to the health of the heart. However, it’s worth changing what you drink. Chemical ridden lagers should be shunned for real ales and spirits and processed mixers should be renounced in favour of red wine (ideally organic).

Once those obstacles have been tackled, the focus should be placed on the diet. Processed foods should be eliminated from the diet as far as possible – the fats, sugars and additives that they are laden with are difficult for our bodies to process in our youth, let alone as we age – they can also contribute to the onset of many unwanted illnesses and diseases.

In place we should eat an all-natural diet that’s abundant in fresh (and ideally organic) fruits and vegetables.

If you haven’t previously, it’s also worth considering consuming a dietary supplement. Options include vitamin pills (on the plus side they are cheap, on the downside, many studies have negated that the body is unable to effectively process vitamins in this form) the Acai berry and other superfood supplements.

The Acai berry benefits include the fact that it is completely natural and is packed full of vital vitamins and antioxidants. The antioxidants present in the Acai berry are believed to reduce the risk of both cancer and heart disease.

The Acai berry can also aid in weight loss – a growing (excuse the pun) concern as we age. The Acai berry is rich in protein and fibre – essential for reducing the appetite and curbing the urge to snack. While Acai berry weight loss supplements are largely marketed at the young, they can benefit all ages and prejudiced advertising should not steer others who may benefit away from trying such a product.

An addition to the list of Acai berry benefits is the fact that all those vitamins can increase energy levels, making it easier to exercise and for longer periods. Exercise in our fifties and beyond is more important than ever. It’s not only vital to keeping our blood pressure in check and heart disease at bay but it can also prevent or reduce the symptoms of arthritis and osteoporosis.

Therefore, while the Acai berry is undoubtedly a highly beneficial supplement for anyone of any age, it is our overall diet and lifestyle that has the largest impact on how we feel as retirement looms. Cutting back on alcohol, shunning the cigarettes and replacing burgers with broccoli are the most important things we need to be doing yet don’t forget to exercise – age can lead to brittle bones and weak bodies yet the more active we are, the lesser impact we will feel and the longer it will take for this impact to manifest.
