-Make sure that the home is not cluttered. A cluttered home means there is more room to trip over things and a higher likelihood of injury or even death after a fall. Seniors tend to be more risky in their own homes because they are confident and comfortable, so they may not pay as much attention.

-Make sure that the floors are not uneven. Slight changes in level are not a huge issue, but if there are lumps in the carpet or actual changes in level that are more than an inch or so, it might present a danger. Having one level is much safer.

-Exercise can help seniors retain mobility and stay fit. Staying active will improve balance, flexibility, coordination, and make it easier for people to get around the house.

-Choose shoes that are properly fitted and have non-skid soles. This way, your loved ones will not have to worry about losing their footing due to improper footwear. It is the small changes that will make the biggest difference, after all.

-Be aware of medications that change awareness level or cause drowsiness. These medications are often at fault for many falls and injuries that occur in the home and they can be prevented.
