Recreation News- Pickleball Creating a Buzz in Many Communities

Tennis, golf, and shuffleboard have been among the top three sports enjoyed by active adults in communities around the world for decades. Today, a new sport is rising to the top, known as pickleball. For all intents and purposes, pickleball is essentially like table tennis, but played on a much larger scale. In this sport, you’ll actually be standing on the ‘table’, using wooden paddles to hit a wiffle ball back and forth.

Pickleball courts can be made from modified tennis courts by adjusting the width and adding lines with tape or chalk. The court is about half the width of a tennis court, which means that one tennis court can be the site for 2 or more pickleball courts for people to enjoy. The rules of pickleball are quite simple. One person serves the ball, and then the opposing players hit it back. Play continues with the ball going back and forth until it goes out of bounds or someone misses the ball. Points are awarded and the play continues.

Many communities are trying out these courts on their existing tennis facilities just to see how people like it. Plus, it’s a great way to utilize space and allow people to have two activities to choose from without investing in the expense of new courts specifically for pickleball. This game can even be played indoors in a gymnasium-style setting, which is a great option for environments where things aren’t always warm and sunny. Tennis and golf are still going to be popular among today’s active adults, but many are looking forward to playing the new game of pickleball for something different and perhaps more exciting.
